South Peoples Projects (SOPPRO) was established in 2004 for Francophone asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants, especially and not exclusively from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, Cote d'Ivoire, and Cameroun. It aims to create opportunities for and encourage active volunteering as a means of capacity building and learning for asylum seekers as a contribution to Welsh society; to relieve poverty amongst African people in Wales; to increase education and training opportunities for refugees and their dependents; to raise awareness of and remove myths about refugees and asylum seekers to increase community cohesion; and to encourage entrepreneurship.
During its two decades of existence, SoPPro has acquired expertise in all projects involving the shared history of the British Isles, and especially the United Kingdom and Africa, especially with the Democratic Republic of Congo, or rather the former Kongo Kingdom, now divided into three countries resulting from colonisation: Angola (where its former capital Mbanza Kongo or San Salvador is located) also known as the Portuguese Kongo, the Democratic Republic of Congo or the former Belgian C. Kongo Belge et l'actuel Republic du Congo ou Congo Brazzaville ou l'ancien Congo Francais, surtout sur la vie et l'oeuvre des explorateurs et surtout missionnaires ayant travaillé au COngo et donne leurs vies pour les Congolais, certains etant décedes y. In the UK, SoPPro is a member of a number of corporations, including the Sub-Saharan Advisory Panel (SSAP), Wales for Africa, Wales Black History, and the African Foundation for Development (AFFORD), and works in partnership with a number of organisations, including the Welsh Refugee Council, Refugee Voice Wales, etc.
One of SoPPro's achievements was to be part of the Community Space Partnership, a network of 8 small organisations that came together and were awarded by the Tudor Trust Fund and Big Lottery Fund, and manage a tree-floor community office and rooms in Newport.
Our Objectives:
- The relief of poverty amongst African people in the UK and Africa, including but not limited to asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants.
- To advance: the education and training of those granted refugee status and their dependents in need thereof so as to advance them in life and assist to adapt within a new community.
- To advance: the education of the public in general about the issues relating to refugees and those seeking asylum.
