South Peoples Projects (SOPPRO) was established in 2004 for Francophone asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants, especially and not exclusively from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, Cote d'Ivoire, and Cameroun. It aims to create opportunities for and encourage active volunteering as a means of capacity building and learning for asylum seekers as a contribution to Welsh society; to relieve poverty amongst African people in Wales; to increase education and training opportunities for refugees and their dependents; to raise awareness of and remove myths about refugees and asylum seekers to increase community cohesion; and to encourage entrepreneurship.
During its two decades of existence, SoPPro has acquired expertise in all projects involving the shared history of the British Isles, and especially the United Kingdom and Africa, especially with the Democratic Republic of Congo, or rather the former Kongo Kingdom, now divided into three countries resulting from colonisation: Angola (where its former capital Mbanza Kongo or San Salvador is located) also known as the Portuguese Kongo, the Democratic Republic of Congo or the former Belgian C. Kongo Belge et l'actuel Republic du Congo ou Congo Brazzaville ou l'ancien Congo Francais, surtout sur la vie et l'oeuvre des explorateurs et surtout missionnaires ayant travaillé au COngo et donne leurs vies pour les Congolais, certains etant décedes y. In the UK, SoPPro is a member of a number of corporations, including the Sub-Saharan Advisory Panel (SSAP), Wales for Africa, Wales Black History, and the African Foundation for Development (AFFORD), and works in partnership with a number of organisations, including the Welsh Refugee Council, Refugee Voice Wales, etc.
One of SoPPro's achievements was to be part of the Community Space Partnership, a network of 8 small organisations that came together and were awarded by the Tudor Trust Fund and Big Lottery Fund, and manage a tree-floor community office and rooms in Newport.
Our Objectives:
- The relief of poverty amongst African people in the UK and Africa, including but not limited to asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants.
- To advance: the education and training of those granted refugee status and their dependents in need thereof so as to advance them in life and assist to adapt within a new community.
- To advance: the education of the public in general about the issues relating to refugees and those seeking asylum.

LINGOMBA BOKORO (OUR LINK IN DRC)
FIRST STAGE: LINKING NEWPORT (Wales, UK) AND BOKORO (DRC)
Since 2010 and with the support of Wales for Africa Community Link grant, South People’s Projects has been linking with LINGOMBA, a new small consortium NGOs based at the city of Bokoro, Bandundu Province, 500 kilometres away from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. With the support of the Italy based Catholic Fathers from the Inongo Diocese, a second hand car has been bought to launch the then link. That car, bought in Newport, has been shipped at Bokoro, with many staffs donated by Wales based charities (Salvation Army Newport, Mother in Need Cardiff, etc.) and individual persons. Some second hand equipment and the car arrived safely at the destination after one year.
Lessons have been learned and a new committee has now been elected to boost the activities and the projects.
It is also agreed between the two committees (Newport and DRC) to structure the consortium with a National Management Committee at Kinshasa, and transitional committee based at Bandundu and the Local management Committee based at Bokoro.
We are now proud of this first achievement and we are now working very hard for the next steps of our partnership and collaboration, especially by launching the so called O.2015.C.
One who looks on any support, grants, NGOs, international aids beneficiaries map, would be surprised that the west of the Congo seems to be a big whole; very few aids and support have been made for that region.
To be honest, this first step was a big challenge and as we now received the report from the Catholic Fathers and the letter from the Committee, we could now start planning our second step with the support of our sponsors. Thank you for all your support.
Official letters, Service Level Agreement between SoPPro and its partners could be found on the ARCHIVES page of this web site.
INONGO DIOCESE
Our dream and vision is to work together with the Catholic church (Fathers, Sisters, Nuns and lay people) of Inongo to deliver the anti-poverty projects as our contribution to the Development Millennium Goals. Our targeting clients and beneficiaries will be poor people of Mai-Ndombe regardless their faith, religion, colour of skin, background, etc.
Some pictures of the poverty at that region could be seen on the Inongo Diocese Catholic Fathers' blogg (http://evecheinongo.blogspot.co.uk/)
This first step of this collaboration was made by a link project between the Catholic Father living in Roma (Italy), SoPPro and the Diocese of Inongo. Fathers sent an amount of money, we bought a second hand car for them and shipped it to Kinshasa, with many staff and items, most of them donated by people of Wales and bought from the Wales for Africa Community Link fist step grant.
